Ash Wednesday ushers in the 40-day penitential season of Lent. Though we are encouraged to be penitent always, the Church since ancient times has set aside this season to be a time of reflection, self-examination, fasting, prayer and confession. It is a right and good practice to view Lent as a time of personal spiritual preparation for Jesus' passion and the glory of the cross and his resurrection which we celebrate during Easter.
